CIQAM WOMEN SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
The word Ciqam, pronounced as she-kum means greenery in Brushaski and promotes an environment where women can prosper and grow. The social enterprise has its primary abode within the Altit Fort since 2003 when restoration work was initiated for the fort. The project was a joint venture of the Aga Khan Cultural Services Pakistan and Royal Norwegian Embassy Pakistan (RNE), created in 2003.
The enterprise aims to impart skills to women which are traditionally viewed as being fortes of men. These may include construction, carpentry, architectural surveys, historical restoration/documentation and hospitality. The enterprise prepares women to enhance their skills and transform them into formal businesses – in a nutshell it empowers local women by helping them become successful entrepreneurs in their own right.
However, CIQAM promotes eco-friendly practices that are not detrimental to the environment and focuses on using eco-friendly natural resources.
