LEIF LARSEN MUSIC CENTER
LEIF LARSEN MUSIC CENTER
Music flows within Hunza’s culture just like its gushing rivers. Located within the Royal Garden of the Altit Fort, the Leif Larsen Music Center provides the traditional musicians of Gilgit and Chitral with facilities and music lessons, assisting them to master different musical instruments and acquire expertise in mountain music. The Center was a partnership project of the Aga Khan Music Initiative and Royal Norwegian Embassy. The center offers local residents with short courses to learn local music instruments and production while it also provides opportunities for visiting artists, historians, writers and environmentalists. The CIQAM social women enterprise is mainly accredited for the center’s construction.
The Center also plays an integral part in organizing musical festivals and events across Hunza. Following its restoration, the first Aga Khan Music Initiative event was held in April 2011 within Altit’s courtyard to revive and reignite the relationship between the fort’s ancient customs and music, dance, celebration and festivals.
